Male: In the latest development in the Maldives, Vice President Mohammed Waheed Hassan has been sworn in as the new President of the island nation.
He has taken over as the new President after Mohammed Nasheed resigned in the wake of mutiny by a section of the police.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has also written to Mohammed Waheed Hassan, assuring all support to him.
Nasheed's departure was voluntary with reports indicating that India played a key role in the transition.
Indian naval sources said that elements of western naval command were on standby. The Indian navy also has an offshore patrol vessel off Maldives.
Meanwhile, Maldives Foreign Minister Ahmed Naseem said that the members were concerned about the current situation in the country.
He said, "All the members are concerned about the current situation in the Government. I don't think members are very happy with the situation, so let's see what happens next."
"We are hoping the situation is calm. I don't intend to resign at the moment," said Naseem.
