India, US on opposite sides of WTO talks
India not ready to further open up its markets and services sector.

Geneva: The 35 ministers attending the ongoing crucial WTO talks in Geneva will start another round of dialogue today.

Though, India and US are working together on the nuclear deal, they are on opposite sides of the talks.

India along with many developing nations is trying to resist the pressure to further open up their markets and services sector. However, the US and European countries want the developing nations to be more flexible on industrial and agricultural trade.

They believe that this is essential to lift the current global economic gloom. But India, Brazil, Argentina, South Africa and other developing countries argue that this would have negative impact on the economical conditions of their poor farmers and small industries.

“We are moving forward in many areas they are moving forward in TRQs, capping, quantum,” said Kamal Nath Commerce and Industry Minister.

US President George W Bush gave a call to Manmohan Singh on Thursday pledging Washington’s support in Indo-US nuclear deal.

In a statement issued shortly after the brief conversation between Bush and Singh, US National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said, "The President said he looks forward to continuing to work with his government to strengthen the United States-India strategic relationship. Both leaders expressed their desire to see the US-India civil nuclear issue move forward as expeditiously as possible.”

So, there are possibilities that Bush's call to Singh may have some implications for the WTO meet as well.
