Is Google dumping the 'I'm Feeling Lucky' button?

New Delhi: Google's new innovations are making some of its iconic features redundant. The next victim could very well be the 'I'm Feeling Lucky' button that appears along with the search field on Google's home page.

The Google Operating System blog, an unofficial blog that tracks news and happening around Google, pointed out that the search engine giant is conducting an experiment with a search interface that doesn't include the 'I'm Feeling Lucky' button.

The new experimental design for Google Finland is quite similar to that on Microsoft's Bing search engine. The search button appears to the right of the search field instead of below and the button uses an icon instead of text. Google also moves the 'cached' and 'similar' links away from the search results area to the Instant Preview Box.

The new Google Instant feature makes the 'I'm Feeling Lucky' feature useless for most of the time as search results appear immediately as a user types in the search keywords. The button takes users directly to the first search result instead of displaying all the results.

The button is often used for Google Bomb techniques, where an unrelated or off-topic web page is made to have the top ranking for certain search keywords. One of the most popular Google Bombing jokes was for the keyword "miserable failure" that on clicking the 'I'm Feeling Lucky' button took the user to George W Bush's biography on the White House website. In 1999, the search for "more evil than Satan himself" led users to the Microsoft home page.

Google hasn't officially said anything about the impending changes, but it seems to be about time that the button that has been around since Google's early days is finally laid to rest.

What's your reaction?
