JD-U demands for farmers’ relief fund
"Farmers’ suicides are evidences of the failure of the Govt in carrying out reforms in the agriculture sector."

New Delhi: Terming farmers' suicides an evidence of the failure of the Government in carrying out reforms in the agriculture sector, the Janata Dal–United or JD(U) on Thursday demanded setting up of a farmers relief fund to provide help in case of damage to crops.

"There is no doubt that the farm sector has been devoid of reforms. It is strange that while trade reforms have been going on for a long time now, the farm sector is being neglected," former Bihar chief minister Jagannath Mishra, who has taken over as head of JD(U)'s 'Kisan Sabha', said in a statement in New Delhi.

Favouring reforms in the agriculture sector, he demanded setting up of a farmers relief fund on the lines of the disaster relief fund to compensate farmers for any loss incurred due to damage to crops.

He said while a handful of farmers had adopted modern techniques and become prosperous, the interests of the small and medium farmers was being neglected.

"An evidence of this is the increasing cases of farmers' suicides," Mishra said.

Mishra demanded easing of the conditions for loans given to farmers and also asked for the repayment procedure to be made more flexible.
