Jumbo dies in fight at Valparai

A five-year-old male elephant was killed in a clash with other pachyderms in Iyarpadi division near Valparai.

A team of Forest officials from Valparai recovered the carcass of the jumbo, found near the Kadamparai dam in Iyarpadi division late on Saturday night. The carcass was spotted by some locals who tipped the forest officials.

“The elephant might have died after a clash with other elephants 10 days back. So, the injury marks were not clearly visible on its body,” said a forest official.

A wildlife biologist in ATR said that “the sub-adult elephant might have clashed with other elephants to defend its territory.”

Valparai forest veterinarian Senthil Nathan, who conducted the autopsy of the animal, said that it was a rare incident an adult elephant dying in a clash. “We use to monitor wild elephants in distress on a regular basis through elephant trackers in every forest range. This is the third incident this year in which an animal is gored to death by another from its community,” said a senior official of the ATR.
