New Delhi: JNU students union leader Kanhaiya Kumar has been released on bail from Tihar Jail and is being taken to the university campus as suggested by him, sources said Thursday.

Delhi police whisked Kanhaiya out of the jail premises after 6 pm evading a large group of mediapersons, took him to the Hari Nagar police station in West Delhi before leaving for JNU.

Kanhaiya was released after two JNU professors and two lawyers reached the jail with his release orders from the Patiala House Court. He later left the jail premises along with them in a car.

"Kanhaiya was released from the jail at around 6.30 pm after his bail bond and release orders were properly scrutinised," additional IG (Prisons) and Tihar spokesperson Mukesh Prasad said.

Three PCR vans joined their car outside Hari Nagar police station and took them to the university.

His release comes a day after Kanhaiya received bail in the sedition case from the Delhi High Court on a bond of Rs 10,000 and a guarantee that he will not participate in any "active or passive" anti-national activity.

Delhi Police have issued an 'advisory' to all district, traffic and PCR units asking them to maintain strict vigil, especially in and around JNU and Delhi University campuses, to avoid any clashes over his release.

All district police commissioners have been asked to provide security and deploy traffic police personnel wherever Kanhaiya goes and the Commissioners of New Delhi and North Delhi have been asked to provide additional security.

In Kanhaiya's hometown Begusarai it was Holi come three weeks early, with people smearing each other with gulaal and bursting firecrackers as TV channels flashed news of his release. Celebrations also broke out inside the JNU campus.

Kanhaiya was arrested on February 12 on sedition charges after anti-national slogans were allegedly raised at an event in the JNU campus held in memory of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru. He was later sent to judicial custody for two weeks.
