Karnataka: Now, Friday mass to invoke rain gods
Churches in Mysore have decided to dedicate their Friday services (Holy Mass) for rains.

Mysore: When it comes to appeasing the rain gods, one’s faith, it seems, doesn’t matter. After the government ordered temples across the state to hold special pujas for rains, churches in Mysore have decided to dedicate their Friday services (Holy Mass) for rains. In announcements made during all services at St Philomena’s Church and other churches on Sunday, priests said all the four services and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, which takes place every Friday, will be dedicated to pray specially for rains. Believers were asked to take part in the services in large numbers and pray for bountiful rains.

“The state is passing through a difficult phase with one of the worst droughts in the last few decades. The farming community is in distress and people are suffering at several places due to lack of drinking water. The drought is expected to throw up several more problems in the near future and all are set to be affected by it. Hence, we should pray for good rains for the well being of all,” the announcements made after the Holy Communion said.

Parish priest Fr K A William said that apart from special prayers in churches, all schools run by the church have been asked to pray for rains during the morning assembly, besides creating awareness among students on judicious use of water. “Students will be told about how precious water is and they will be sensitised about problems people are set to face in the near future if they continue to waste water,” he said.

Priests in several other churches in Mysore in sermons during services on Sunday also asked devotees to pray for rains. The government had ordered 34,000 temples across the state to hold special prayers for rains.
