Lucknow: The family members of Chandan Singh, who was killed during clashes in Uttar Pradesh’s Kasganj district, met UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday to demand martyr status for the deceased.

Singh’s mother and sister reached the Annexe in the afternoon and demanded stern action against the culprits and also requested the CM to expedite the probe to apprehend the absconding men.

“We met CM Yogi and asked him to give the status of martyr to my brother. However, the chief minister did not assure us anything. Also, we requested him to take strict action against the accused,” Singh’s sister said, adding that they also handed over a demand letter to the CM.

The Yogi government had earlier announced an ex-gratia of Rs 20 lakh for the kin of the deceased.

Explosives were also found during house to house searches following which the state police chief said that the stringent National Security Act (NSA) would be invoked against the culprits.

UP governor Ram Naik had also expressed grief over the clashes in Kasganj and said that such incidents bring a bad name to the state.

The district has recently been embroiled in tension after 22-year-old Chandan Gupta died in clashes that started after an altercation over ‘Tiranga Yatra’ on Republic Day. Singh, a B.Com student, was hit on the chest by a bullet and was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to injuries.
