THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala is a role model for other states in the field of energy conservation, Governor M O H Farook said here on Sunday. Speaking after inaugurating the month-long energy conservation campaign programmes organised by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency at a star-studded programme held at the Nishagandhi auditorium, he said that the state had created history by replacing 1.30 crore incandescent lamps with CFL lamps.The Governor exhorted all citizens to act as brand ambassadors of energy conservation.Union Minister of State for Power K C Venugopal said that the Centre would launch a Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) scheme for small, medium and large-scale industries. “Those units which meet the energy target set for them will be awarded an energy conservation certificate which could be transacted,” he said. Kerala is facing problems in increasing power production and also for laying transmission lines from other states.“Energy conservation is vital for the state to survive,” he said. The Centre is also thinking about introducing a Bill on building construction, making energy conservation systems mandatory for new buildings. Lauding the State Government’s efforts for energy conservation, he said that the state could save 406 MW during the 11th Five Year Plan till now. “The figure for the country is 9,000 MW which is expected to touch 10,000 MW by the end of the Plan,” he said. Electricity Minister Aryadan Mohammed said that the state was producing only 40 per cent of the demand. The rest is met by buying power which is causing a heavy loss to the government. “It is high time the public are made aware of the importance of energy conservation,” he said. Transport Minister V S Sivakumar, Mayor K Chandrika, Olympian P T Usha and cine stars Suresh Gopi, Baburaj, Kalpana and Archana Kavi attended the function.
