Kerala: The Kerala High Court on Tuesday suggested a CBI probe into the fire tragedy at Kollam's Puttingal Devi temple, which claimed 111 lives.
While observing that the Puttingal Temple fire tragedy should be inquired into by the CBI, the court asked the government to take action against those responsible for the April 10 mishap.
Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has already called an all-party meeting to discuss the tragedy.
"It is only the observation of the High Court that Kollam tragedy should be investigated by the CBI. We have called for an all-party meeting on April 14 where the next course of action and decision will be taken," he said.
The Solicitor General who appeared on behalf of the Kerala government told the HC that one cannot rule violation of safety measures during the fireworks on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.
The court then questioned the role of officials in preventing such fireworks in the district. "Act against erring officials," the HC observed. It also asked the state police and the district officials to submit an affidavit in this regard.
Meanwhile, five absconding members of the managing committee of the Puttingal Devi temple surrendered in the morning.
Temple Trust President, Jayalal, Secretary, J Krishnankutty, Shivaprasad, Surendran Pillai and Ravindran Pillai informed police that they wanted to surrender and reached in front of a temple at Kappil near Paravoor and surrendered.
