KOTTAYAM: It seems the Railways has not learnt any lessons from the gruesome tragedy suffered by Soumya a year ago. Reminiscent of that episode, the ladies’ compartment of a passenger train on Thursday became the scene of an attack by an intruder. The incident happened in the Kottayam-bound Ernakulam-Kottayam passenger train near the Kuruppanthara railway station at 9 am. According to eyewitnesses in the train, the man whom the police later identified as Sadananda Deshmukh, 42, of Maharastra, forcibly entered the jampacked women’s compartment when it reached Kuruppunthara station and attacked the women passengers, majority of whom were students. In the melee, Jisha Jose, 19, a student of Government Polytechnic, Ettumanoor, was injured. She was later admitted to a private hospital.Deshmukh was caught hold of by the people and handed over to the railway station master. The police arrested him and took him to the Kaduthuruthy police station. “Initial interrogation has not yielded much result. His statements are vague and he has been changing them every minute. A case has been registered against him based on the statements of the students and other women passengers. Detailed interrogation will be done in the coming days,” said Jeevana Chandran, SI, Kaduthuruthy police station.Eyewitnesses said he had been spotted in the women’s compartment earlier also. Police said Deshmukh was acting like a psychopath in custody. The Kaduthuruthy police registered a case against him under section 354 IPC for attempt to outrage the modesty of women. He was also charged with attempted robbery. He was produced before the Judicial First Class Magistrate Vaikom and remanded in custody for 15 days.
