Kerala Imposes 52-day Trawling Ban Till July 31. Details Inside
If the rules are violated, a strict action will be taken against them, warned the Fisheries Department.

A trawling ban has been imposed in Kerala. As the season of monsoon approaches, the farmers were expected to lay their fishing nets. This year, this step is being taken to protect marine life. As per reports, the ban began on June 9, midnight, and is expected to end on July 31. The 52-day ban is an initiative taken by the central government for the protection of marine life. According to more reports, the trawlers have to stay 12 nautical miles away from the Kerala coast. If the rules are violated, strict action will be taken against them, warned the Fisheries Department. The traditional fishermen, who use tools like canoes and inboard boats are allowed to continue their hunt in the waters during this period.

Monsoon is the season when commercially important fishes like oil sardines reproduce. So, since it is their breeding season, the ban is imposed to avoid disturbing the fishes, as it could cause their depletion.

During the ban period, the trawlers and allied workers are going to be provided with free rations by the state government. Before the ban was commenced, the District Collectors directed boats from other states to leave the coastal regions.

The Marine Enforcement and Coastal Police were tasked with moving the boats from the sea to safe locations. They have to ensure that no rules are being broken and that the offenders will have to face action, if involved. If a trawler violates the rule, they will have to pay a fine.

As per the information, the first trawling ban took place in Kerala, in 1989. Some fishermen even get new jobs during the period or just use it to repair their boats and other tools.
