The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Saturday urged the protesting doctors and medical students across the nation to resume their duties and assured them of all possible efforts to ensure safety of the healthcare professionals.
The ministry has also proposed to constitute a committee to suggest measures for safety of healthcare professionals at workplace. It said that representatives of all stakeholders including the state governments would be invited to share their suggestions with the committee.
The representatives of Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA), Indian Medical Association (IMA) and Resident Doctors’ Associations of Governmental Medical Colleges and Hospitals of Delhi have met the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare at New Delhi amid the ongoing protests over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.
The doctors’ associations have put forth their demands regarding their concern over the safety and security of healthcare workers at the workplace.
The ministry said that the Centre is sensitive to the safety demands. It said that 26 States have already passed legislation for protection of healthcare workers in their respective states.
The ministry further requested the agitating doctors to resume their duties in the larger public interest and in view of the rising cases of Dengue and Malaria.
Kolkata Rape-Murder case:
The nation has been shaken after a trainee doctor was brutally raped while on duty at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The medical fraternity across the nation is on streets on demanding the prompt action in the investigation. Junior doctors and medical students across the hospitals and medical colleges in Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad and other cities staged a protest demanding speedy justice.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has announced a nationwide strike. IMA has declared a 24-hour withdrawal of services by all the modern medicine doctors of the country irrespective of the sector and place of work. Emergencies and casualties will function. No OPDs. No elective surgeries. The withdrawal commenced at 6 am on Saturday and will end at 6 am on Sunday 18 August 2024.
The Kolkata Police have arrested Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, last week and was sent to 14-day police custody. The accused was charged under sections 64 (rape) and 103 (murder) of BNS and was produced before Sealdah court, which remanded him to police custody till August 23.
The Calcutta High Court has handed over the case to the CBI for further investigation.
