BANGALORE: Impressed with the zero waste management of Vellore model for the solid waste management (SWM), the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) contemplates to launch a similar pilot project in the state.
The SWM involves segregation of waste into biodegradable and nonbiodegradable waste, composting of the biodegradable waste, selling of the compost and recycling the nonbiodegradable waste. The pollution control board is process of identifying the space including temples and institutions like school and college campus.A team of officials from KSPCB also visited Vellore to study the SWM model recently.

Terming it as wealth out of waste projects, A S Sadashivaiha, Chairman, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) told TNIE that 'Vellore has been outstanding in the management of waste. Vellore Institute of Technology houses nearly 7,000student and teacher population who are engaged in bioconversion of degradable waste in a shed within the campus. Besides, a project has been implemented in the Golden Lakshmi temple."

The board aims to offer training for self help groups and Gram Panchayat on identifying and segregating different types of waste besides motivating volunteers to come forward. IT would also provide equipment and uniforms to the people engaging themselves for it.
