BANGALORE: To check irregularities of unregistered bio-medical waste disposers in the state, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) is tracking the activities of unregistered medical units in the state under the Kanataka Private Medical Establishment Act.KSPCB member secretary, S M Puttabuddhi said, “Besides tracing unregistered medical units in the state, we are also planning to set up a committee consisting of one person from the health department, professor from a medical college, a doctor and three other administrative officials in each district to monitor bio medical waste disposal in the district.” According to official sources, only 11,500 medical units are registered with the KSPCB, though there are more than 15,000 medical units in the state.According to the report submitted by Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike to the Lokadalat, out of the 1,820 medical units, which include hospitals, clinics, laboratories and blood banks, only 545 units have displayed the KSPCB authorisation in their premises.According to the biomedical waste recyclers — Marradi and Ramky — only 696 units send bio medical waste to the recyclers.According to the rules, all the medical units should register themselves with the KSPCB, besides registering with the local bodies and other regulatory authorities.The medical units should send their bio-medical waste to authorised recyclers.Hospitals that treat more than 1,000 patients in a month are also supposed to set up effluent treatment plants to treat the liquid waste generated in their premises.
