PUDUCHERRY: Labour union members at the Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute at Kirumampakkam on Monday loc-ked up the hospital and prevented entry and exit of ambulances as well as patients, demanding cyclone relief.According to sources, the members also prevented a team from the Medical Council of India (MCI) from carrying out inspection at the college, besides forcing patients out and threatening the doctors and other staff from performing their duty.  The post-graduate students who were appearing for practical examinations were also affected as patients were not available for the examination. The college authorities had lodged a police complaint following which DIG  ID Shukla visited the spot.  Though the situation was brought under control by noon, the problem is far from getting over as the labour union had been asked to wait for a solution till April 18, once the MCI inspection is completed, sources said. The college is expected to resume operations after that, they added.  The problem started after the college identified 140 persons affected by Thane for cyclone relief.  However, the labour union demanded that all the 400 workers be provided cyclone relief, which was not accepted by the management, chai-rman of the college Rajgopalan told Express.   “We have given preference to local people in recruitment and now they are opposing us. How can we give relief to those not affected also?,” he asked.  It  is alleged that the workers are from the constituency of Welfare and  Labour Minister P Rajavelu and are exerting pressure claiming he was backing them.
