New Delhi: Indian Railways will soon introduce high speed trains in Northern, Western, Southern and Eastern regions of the country. The hi-tech trains run at 300-350 kms per hour and can cover distances up to 600 kms in just two-to-three hours.

Equipped with state-of-the-art signaling and train control systems, these trains are likely to capitalise on the unprecedented growth in inter-city travel.

Railway Minister Lalu Prasad had shown keen interest in high-speed trains during his visit to European countries last year.

Indian Railways has already launched two dedicated freight corridors—Easter and Western, linking Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Kolkata—for faster movement of goods across the country.

The Railway Minister has said all alternatives including private public partnership will be considered for implementation of passenger corridors.

Chairman, Railway Board J P Batra said, “there is also a proposal to run double-stack containers on electrified routes. If we are successful in running these containers on electrified routes, India would be the first country in the world to achieve this feat."

According to the Rail Budget 2007-08, production of rolling stock will be doubled as compared with the previous plan. Besides, capacity of existing rail coach and loco production units will be enhanced through expansion of these units.
