NELLORE: Constitutional amendment should be made mandatory for creation of a new state to prevent political parties and leaders from exploiting people for their selfish motives, freedom fighter and Telangana leader Konda Laxman Bapuji has said.
Speaking at the first Sadbhavana Sadassu (goodwill convention) organised by Andhra Rashtra Praja Samiti here on Sunday, he termed the convention as historic and said creation of new states should be based on convenience and not on emotion, and favoured formation of small states for administrative convenience.He said the demand for a separate Telangana state would not have arisen had the Sree Bagh Pact been implemented in letter and spirit.
Criticising the BJP, he said the party, which formed Jharkhand, Uttarakhand and Chhattisgarh states when it led the NDA government at the Centre, failed to do so in the case of Telangana bowing to the pressure from TDP supremo N Chandra Babu Naidu. Same was the case with the Congress as its president Sonia Gandhi was reluctant to divide Andhra Pradesh, he said, adding that Naidu's twoeyed policy was only to hoodwink the people.Creation of awareness among the people of all the three regions on the merits of smaller states would go a long way in ensuring cordial relations among the people different regions, he claimed.Claiming that people in the nonTelangana regions too were slowly seeing the merit of the argument in favour of smaller states, Bapuji said a staunch integrationist like Lagadapati Rajagopal softened his stance and was endorsing the merits of small states.Leaders of various associations including Subba Reddy and Bhuman were present. Congress, TDP and Left leaders stayed away from the meeting while BJP leaders attended it. TDP district president Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy, however, made a courtesy call on Konda Lakhshman at the guest house.
