He who plants a tree, plants a hope, once said Lucy Larcom, a great American poet of all times. Acting as dustbins to harmful gases, the advantages of these green guards are uncountable. Don’t they make us feel serene, peaceful, restful and tranquil in their grove?Although all of us know the benefits of trees and the green canopy, most of us do not get the time to go that extra mile and plant a sapling, a step that would ensure a better future for the coming generations. Cleaner air, good monsoons, no global warming and the list of advantages just go endless.Acting as a ray of hope and saviour of these green guards is Trees for Free, an organisation that has taken up the initiative of bringing back the green cover in Bangalore. The organisation with the help of its volunteers, plants saplings free of cost. With over 27,000 saplings planted by the organisation till date in the IT city, Tree for Free will take a stride forward again on Saturday as it is all set to rope in over 60 saplings in NOBO Nagar.“We are planting these saplings on the roadside with the main objective of providing food and shelter to the birds apart from increasing the green canopy. We will be planting different varieties of saplings that will include Wild Anjur, Singapore Cherry, Neem plantlets and Jamuns. Most of these varieties attract birds as they have ample food to offer,” said Janet Yegneswaran, founder president, Tree for Free. The organisation extends the helping hand once it receives a request from people, which includes schools, colleges, hospitals, gated communities etc. “Earlier we used to go door-to-door. But now with much exposure that we have gained, people come up with requests to plant saplings. Those who come up with a request are also responsible for planting and looking after these planted saplings. Our role is to only plant it for them,” said Janet. And this time, the initiative has been taken up by Ravindranath Manvi, a civil engineer and a resident of NOBO nagar. “The area has no tress and this has also affected the birds. The whole place looks barren with no green cover and birds around. We thought of coming up with plantation to give it a green look and make it lively. I have also asked Janet to come up with a variety of saplings and specially those that are useful as far as attracting birds are concerned. The plantation will take place at 11 am on Saturday,” informed Ravindranath. About the organisation and its initiative, Janet said, “We are a charitable trust planting trees for free in Bangalore to bring back the green cover. We do not distribute seedlings and we do not question the tree cutting which sometimes is necessary for a growing city like ours. We cover a distance of 30 kms radius from Bangalore city and even if the request is for one, we plant it.”
