New Delhi: The Indian government has launched a multi-pronged operation to evacuate 18,000 Indians stranded in violence-torn Libya. So far 1,200 Indians have been brought back safely under Operation Safe Homecoming.
New Delhi is looking to evacuate 1300 more Indians by ship from Libyan port city of Benghazi, on Tuesday. Six-hundred Indians arrived home on two Air India flights on Tuesday morning.
India has also got permission to land three planes a day in Libya until March 12 and there's hope also for those who are stuck in the smaller cities of Libya and have been till now unable to reach Tripoli or Benghazi.
A ship is currently docked in Benghazi and it is expected to ferry out another 1000 people to Egypt by Wednesday night. Around 3,000 Indians are expected to be evacuated by two chartered ships in the next few days.
The government is concerned about the safety of Indians as there has been violence in Libya following demands for the removal of Muammar Gaddafi, who has been the leader of Libya for last four decades. The violence has claimed over 1,000 lives so far.
