Maha petrol pumps go dry from Monday
Over 2,500 petrol pumps will stop buying stock from Monday to protest the high sales tax imposed on them.

Mumbai: More than 2,500 petrol pumps in Maharashtra will stop buying stock from Monday onwards as a part of an indefinite protest.

Petrol pump dealers are demanding a cut in the sales tax on petrol products. They want the sales tax in Maharashtra to be reduced from the present 34 per cent to 24 per cent, which is the rate in Gujarat.

These dealers had gone on a similar strike in September. The effect tomorrow would be mild as the existing stock at petrol pumps will last for the next two or three days.

The Petrol Dealers Association (PDA), Mumbai, had begun negotiations with the Maharashtra government to bring down the sales tax, but they did not progress well and thus the strike.

Among the other demands of the petrol dealers are to remove license fee on Compressed Natural Gas.

The PDA had gone on a similar protest action just two months ago - on September 18,19 - and later had called off their no-purchase on assurances from the state Government to look into the matter.
