Mumbai: The Maharashtra Government on Monday said it would request the CBI to issue a Red Corner Notice against underworld don Chhota Rajan, allegedly the main conspirator in the murder of senior journalist J Dey.
Home Minister RR Patil told the Legislative Assembly that Dey was killed by aides of Chhota Rajan in early June.
"Nine persons have been arrested so far and the police are looking out for three more who are absconding. Forensic experts have confirmed that the bullets found in Dey's body were fired from the gun recovered from the accused," Patil informed the house during a discussion on the issue, adding the chargesheet against the accused would be filed soon.
J Dey, Editor (special investigation) with an English tabloid Mid Day was shot dead on June 11 by four motorcycle-borne men in suburban Powai allegedly at the behest of Rajan who is hiding in a foreign country.
Responding to the supplementaries on the proposed law to prevent attacks on journalists, Patil said the cabinet sub-committee headed by Industries Minister Narayan Rane would submit its report in a month.
He also said that the Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has rejected the demand by a section of the media to remove Rane as head of the sub-committee.
According to Patil, the committee will look into the issue of fixing responsibility and accountability on journalists.
Referring to protection of professionals from other fields, Patil said attack on doctors has already been made a non-bailable offence while lawyers handling sensitive cases are given protection.
