Maharashtra, Andhra celebrate New Year
Gudhi Padwa in Maharashtra and Ugadi in Andhra, the day begins a fresh year.

New Delhi: Maharashtra celebrates Gudhi Padwa on Friday and Andhra Pradesh celebrates Ugadi.

Gudhi Padwa is considered as one of the most auspicious days by Maharashtrians, apart from Dassera, Diwali and Akshay Tritiya. It is the New Year’s Day for Maharashtra and so is Ugadi for Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

In Maharashtra, people hoist long sticks (called Gudhis) just outside their homes, holding a bunch of neem leaves, sweetmeats, silken cloth and a copper or silver pot.

Both, in Andhra Pradesh and in Maharashtra, people offer prayers, wear new clothes, organise cultural programmes and get together on this day to begin the New Year on the right note.
