Man held for harassing girl in train

The Railway police on Monday arrested a middle-aged man for allegedly harassing a girl student in a train.

The arrested is Jaimon, 45, of Kailasam, Amayannoor near Ayarkkunnam. The incident occurred in the Thiruvananthapuram-bound Jan Satabdi Express around 10.30 am.

 The girl who hails from Cheroor near Thrissur boarded the train from Thrissur at 8.30 am. When the train left Ernakulam Jaimon reportedly started making advances to her. When he continued the harassment despite her protest, she contacted her relatives over phone and informed the Railway police about the incident.

 When the train reached Kottayam by 10.45 am Railway police took Jaimon into custody and the girl continued journey.

Two woman police constables accompanied her to Thiruvananthapuram and received a complaint from her on board. Jaimon had boarded the train from Shoranur and was on his way to Kottayam.

 “A case has been registered against him under section 354 of IPC (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty),” said George Varghese, sub-inspector of Railway police, Kottayam.

 The girl is a BTech student of an engineering college in  Thiruvananthapuram and was  on her way to collect transfer certificate from the college. Meanwhile, DYFI activists took out a march to the railway station alleging that Railway police were trying to protect the accused.
