New Delhi: The UP Government on Monday hit upon several derogatory and objectionable profiles of Chief Minister Mayawati on social networking site Orkut, putting the entire state machinery on its toes.
The profiles, described as deregatory and malicious, have also invited legal trouble for the Google-owned networking site with the Uttar Pradesh government ordering a probe into the matter.
Taking a serious view of the alleged objectionable references to Mayawati on the site, the government said it would take strict action against the offenders. "We have the expertise to deal with such matters. We will take steps to ensure the offenders are punished," state Home Secretary Javed Ahmed said.
According to UP Government sources, some mischief mongers posted several profiles of the Chief Minister, including some objectionable, fictitious personal details attributed to her.
One profile goes by the name of Mulayam-Mayawati, while another has several objectionable comments on her personnel life. Yet another profile simply says: "I hate Mayawati."
The government has vowed stern action against the people responsible for the act. "If it is found that objectionable words have been used against the Chief Minister, necessary steps will follow," Ahmed said.
He said the government had no knowledge about the issue till date and an investigation has been ordered to find out the details. "There are enough legal provisions against cyber crimes and the state police will do what is required to punish the guilty," he said.
Senior police and Home Department officials of UP, however, expressed ignorance about the whole issue. They even refused to comment whether the state government will order a probe into the controversy and punish the guilty for tarnishing the image of the CM.
Orkut had earlier landed in similar controversies over the ‘Shivaji’ fiasco in Mumbai and after a malicious profile of a Delhi schoolgirl got uploaded on the site last year.
