Chandragiri constituency in Tirupati district came alive recently. This happened when Tirupati Urban Development Authority (TUDA) chairman Chevireddy Mohith Reddy held a massive rally before filing his nomination at the constituency headquarters on Thursday. State Tourism Minister and Nagari MP RK Roja and sitting MLA Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy attended Mohith Reddy’s campaign rally. Mohith Reddy, who is only 26 years old, is one of the youngest candidates to contest the 2024 assembly elections. He is the son of two-time Chandragiri legislator Dr Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy, who in turn is contesting for Parliament from Ongole on a YSRCP ticket.
Mohith Reddy will face TDP’s Pulivarthi Nani in Chandragiri in an electoral battle that knows no boundaries. Mohith’s father Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy defeated Pulivarthi Nani in the 2019 elections by a record margin of 41755 votes. After initial hesitation, the TDP again fielded Pulivarthi Nani in Chandragiri despite the loss of confidence on the ground as the party could not find a suitable alternative.
What is even more interesting is the fact that though Chandragiri constituency is the home constituency of TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu, whose native village Naravaripalli is located here. This constituency has always been a stronghold of the Congress party in the past and has now become a bastion of the YSRCP.
Chandrababu Naidu’s electoral debut was from Chandragiri constituency, where he successfully contested on a Congress party ticket in 1978. After his defeat to TDP candidate Venkataramana Naidu Medasani in the 1983 elections, the first elections of the Telugu Desam Party after its formation in Andhra Pradesh, Naidu switched to the TDP and shifted his base to the backwater Kuppam assembly constituency, where he has had an unbroken winning streak since 1989.
Talking to reporters after filing his nomination from Chandragiri constituency on Thursday, Mohith Reddy expressed confidence that the YSRCP will reassert its supremacy in the constituency where the TDP has not won an electoral victory for three decades.
