The tennis player was quoted as saying "whether before or after marriage, the most important matter was that sex was safe".

Cochin: Tennis icon Sania Mirza has discovered that fame has its flip side too.

The World No. 31 walked out of a news conference during a brand promotion function on Sunday as the media asked her to clarify her recent remarks on 'pre-martial sex'.

The 19-year-old refused to answer any questions other than about the Malabar jewellery brand she was promoting, but stormed out after the media continued to pester her.

"I had come to represent the Malabar group, an NRI jewellery group, and would want to talk about the company's future plans," she said.

"I gave a press release yesterday and that was it. That's all I have to say and I don't have to say anything else about it. You should have seen the paper if you don't know. You should have seen it yesterday," she added, seconds before walking out.

The tennis star earned the wrath of Muslim conservatives after she was quoted as saying "whether before or after marriage, the most important matter was that sex was safe".

She issued prompt denials in a press release saying her statements made in New Delhi, were misinterpreted and that "pre-marital sex was a sin Allah could not forgive."

The teenager has also faced the ire of conservatives for wearing short skirts at the U S Open earlier this year, but brushed aside the row, saying it was her play and not her dress that needed to be scrutinised.
