Islamabad: Scores of Islamist militants destroyed at least 10 lorries on Sunday in north-western Pakistan in an attack on a truck terminal used for transporting supplies to US and NATO troops in Afghanistan, police said.

Three private guards were injured when insurgents fired rocket-propelled grenades at the depot on the edge of Peshawar, the capital of troubled North-West Frontier Province.

"Amid heavy gunfire, they torched at least 10 trucks loaded with cement bags," police officer Fazal Wahid said. Living quarters for the guards were also gutted.

The militants escaped after a brief exchange of fire with police units responding to the attack, the officer said.

The land route from Peshawar to Afghanistan serves as the main supply line for international troops fighting Taliban militants.

After repeated attacks on terminals in Peshawar and at vulnerable points along the famous Khyber Pass, the US is seeking alternative routes through Russia and Central Asian republics.

Many of the truck terminals have been shifted to Pakistan's eastern province of Punjab, where the security situation is calm.
