Ahmednagar (Maha): A three-year-old boy fell into a borewell in Kanadgaon village in the district on Monday afternoon but was rescued within four hours with the help of a parallel tunnel, police said.

The incident took place when Manoj Anshabapu Ghorpade, who was playing near the open borewell on his family farm in the village in Rahuri taluka, around 42 kms from the district headquarters of Ahmednagar, fell into the borewell at around 1.30 pm, they said.

According to police, even though the borewell was 250-feet deep, the boy landed on a rock that was stuck in the borewell at around 35 feet from the surface.

His mother saw him falling into the well and raised an alarm, following which his relatives and people in the village gathered, they added.

Shrirampur sub-divisional officer (SDO) Suhas Mapari came to the site and co-ordinated the rescue operation.

"There was some construction work going on nearby, from where a JCB machine was requisitioned for the rescue operation. Since there was no access for the JCB to reach the spot, a road was first made," Mapari said.

A 40-feet deep parallel tunnel was dug and the boy was finally pulled out of the borewell at 5.30 pm, Mapari added.

The victim was later admitted to Swami Vivekanand Hospital here.

According to hospital sources, Manoj is out of danger.
