New Delhi: In a bid to take its Clean India campaign to grass roots level, the Centre has sought "active participation" of millions of MNREGA workers for the ambitious cleanliness drive to be launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 2.

In a directive, the Centre has asked the states to ensure active participation of people who worked in the rural job scheme in the almost a month-long drive. "...It is crucial that all ranks and file working in MNREGA participate actively in this campaign," the Centre said in a letter sent to state governments.

It said that all block level officers in charge of MNREGA should undertake a Swachh Bharat Camp (SBC) for all job card holders of MNREGA in each village in which they should be explained about the concepts of personal hygiene, clean house, clean street/surroundings and a clean village.

MNREGA workers should be administered pledge for cleanliness and officials should take up joint action for collective cleaning of the village through "shrama daan". The Prime Minister's 'Clean India' campaign is planned as a mass movement aimed at cleaning the country. Modi had on August 15 announced the launch of the campaign.

Ahead of the launch of "Clean India" campaign, Modi has said he will himself go out using the broom to make the drive a success.
