The 10-day-long Lepakshi Handicrafts and Handlooms Exhibition representing the hard work of Inidan artisans was inaugurated by Y Madhusudana Reddy, IFS VC and MD of AP Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd, on Saturday at the Zoroastrian Club at Secunderabad. Art and sculptureThere are several stalls that have on offer a variety of religious paintings and marble statue of gods and goddesses such as Durga ,Ganesha, Mahakala Shiva, Parvati, and so on. But if you prefer something a bit more secular, then head for the stalls that are displaying a variety of paintings of nature, women clad in traditional garb, dancing women, animals, to name a few, in a vast range of sizes. One of the more interesting and aesthetically pleasing artworks on offer at the exhibition ate the Tanjore Paintings from Tamil Nadu, painted and decorated with gold by Moham Adimullah, who doubles as the proprietor of the stall. So if you’re looking to fill up the walls of your home with art, then this is one exhibition you should not miss out on.Home decorTowards the centre are a number of stalls that have on offer a variety of kitchenware — jugs, plates, spatulas, spoons — all made entirely out of wood. Also on offer is a small but exquisite collection of beautifully carved wooden doors. And that’s just scratching the surface of all the home décor items on sale — if you’re looking to give your home a makeover, this is the place to go.FashionGorgeous sarees in pure silk and cotton, pashmina shawls, cotton kurta for both men and women — you name it, and you will probably be able to find it in this exhibition. There are also a variety of fashion accessories available — leather and jute bags, jootis, wooden bangles, to name a few. The goods on offer are much more fashion conscious than before. According to Alok Varma, the proprietor of a stall selling kurtis for women, “I participated in this exhibition ever last year, but the stuff I had then was not so innovative in terms of design. This year I have got much more fashionable maal.”JewelleryWhether it’s junk jewellery you love, or the semi-precious kinds, you are sure to find something you like. This is also the venue to visit if you’re merely looking to purchase semi-precious gemstone that haven’t yet been made into ornaments. There are a few stalls that have on offer jewellery customised according to your Vedic astrology or Zodiac.Jeweller Prishanthy offer some insight into his design process, “ We have to change the designs of the jewellery depending not just on the season, but also on the location at which we are selling. Women from different parts of the country have different tastes. While the stones that we use are the same every year, we give them different shapes and finishes.”ToysThe popular Kondapally toys that are so ubiquitous in our culture are also on sale at the exhibition. If you have kids, these are a must buy. These pretty wooden toys are extremely safe.
