New Delhi: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday warned the Opposition Congress not to politicise the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case that has put his government in the dock.
"Those dancing on the funeral of Soharabuddin should know that it would not lead them to Gandhinagar,” PTI quoted Modi as saying.
Modi for the first time spoke about the fake encounter case, which has landed nearly half a dozen Gujarat policemen behind the bars.
"The 5.5-crore Gujaratis will not tolerate this and the Congress will get the reply by people using the ballot papers (in the coming elections)."
He was addressing a huge public meeting organised as part of a Gujarat BJP function to felicitate him on becoming the longest serving Chief Minister of the state.
The event, attended by BJP President Rajnath Singh, party leaders L K Advani, Venkaiah Naidu and Navjot Singh Sidhu, is also being seen as a show-of-strength by the Modi faction in the run-up to elections as his detractor Keshubhai Patel is also being felicitated by his community in a similar function on Monday in Surat.
Modi also used the gathering to criticise Congress President Sonia Gandhi and said the imported leader of the party is spreading "falsehood" against his government.
Modi's statements are being seen in political circles as virtual launch of BJP's campaign for the polls scheduled later this year. The BJP Government's term ends in December.
