With the communication gap widening between mothers and daughters making it difficult for girl students to sort out their problems or open out to them, the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan has launched ‘Ma, Beti Sammelan’ at all upper primary government and  aided schools across the district.

Against the backdrop of growing abuse and problems faced by girl children, the programme aims to create awareness on how mothers need to spend more time with daughters, understand their needs and earn their trust so that they will be able to open out worries and solve them.

“Studies show that mothers especially the working hardly get to spend prime time with daughters and a communication gap sets in. So we thought of introducing this programme as precautionary measure at an earlier stage than resorting to remedial measures during adolescence. The project was launched in Rajasthan under ‘Ma, Beti Sammelan’ and we chose the same name,” said Shine, SSA district project officer.

Studies revealed the students generally tend to discuss physiological, psychological, emotional and other problems with peer groups and find it difficult to discuss the issues with mothers. As a result students suffer silently. There is an early trend in menarche and the normal age for attaining it has come down to 11.5 from 13. This is a sensitive period when care is needed.

“Training for implementing the project was given at the state resource level initially. Training has been given to block resource persons and cluster resource persons. But parents have been chosen at the field level. In each school, three students and their mothers and a trainer will impart it to the rest of the students and the mothers,” said Dhanya P Vasu, SSA programme officer.

The module supported by audio visual aid is simple so that parents of different socio-economic backgrounds can comprehend it.
