Mumbai: In a blatant case of religious discrimination, 25-year-old Misbah Quadri claimed that she was denied a flat in Mumbai for being a Muslim. Quadri claimed that was about to move in a 3-BHK apartment at Sanghvi Heights in Wadala when she was warned by the broker that the housing society did not accept Muslim tenants.

Quadri said that the broker told her that she would have to sign a "no-objection certificate" declaring that if she faced any harassment from her neighbours because of her religion, the builder, the owner and the broker "would not be legally responsible".

Quadri said, "Many brokers refused to show me houses because I'm a Muslim. Many residents would also complain because of my religion. Once I was asked to move out within a week of moving in."

Within a week, the broker threatened to call the police and get her thrown out of the flat, she added.

Lawyer-activist Shehzad Poonawalla has filed a petition with National Commission for Minorities and National Human Rights Commission.

The incident took place just a few days after a Mumbai-based diamond export company rejected a man's job application for being a Muslim. MBA graduate Zeshan Ali Khan mailed his resume to Hari Krishna Exports and in reply, they said they hire only non-Muslim candidates.
