Mumbai: Festive gambling is no more a safe bet following commissioner of police Arup Patnaik asking his troops to be more alert for such activities in the month of Shravan. The results have started showing.

On Saturday, Borivli police arrested 13 people — including nine women — for gambling.

However, people from certain communities have expressed their displeasure with such an order and the subsequent actions. Detractors have said that playing cards, especially Teen Patti on Janmashtami, is very auspicious and is an enduring tradition.

A police source said, "We all know people do play cards on such days, but if the order is from the highest authority then it must be followed."

Raising the stakes

According to officials from Borivli police station, following the order from the commissioner, cops were patrolling the area, keeping an eye out for any gambling activities. In this process, arrests were made from Hari Om apartment where all those apprehended were playing cards.

Senior police inspector Bhagwan Chate of Borivli police station said, "All of the people including women were charged under Gambling Act. They were later released after paying a fine of Rs 1,200 each."

The officer added that the men and women are residents of posh areas in Malad, Kandivli, Borivli and Dahisar.
