A woman resident doctor was allegedly assaulted by a patient and a group of his ‘intoxicated’ attendants at Mumbai’s Sion Hospital on Sunday morning. This incident comes amid the nationwide outrage over the horrendous rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor in Kolkata.

The police have booked three persons, including two women, and detained two of them in connection to the matter.

According to BMC’s MARD, an association representing the resident doctors of Mumbai’s KEM, Sion, Nair and Cooper hospitals, the incident took place at around 3.30 am on Sunday when the doctor was on duty in the ward.

The patient visited the Sion’s Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital with injuries on his face and while he was being treated, a group of 5-6 relatives, who were all in an inebriated state, abused the doctor. They also threatened and attempted to physically assault her. The doctor sustained injuries while defending herself.

The patient and his attendant fled the hospital after the incident.

“This is an incident of 3:30 in the morning today where a patient and some of his relatives reached the hospital in a drunk condition and got into a fight with the woman resident doctor. It is a matter of great concern that this is happening in Mumbai,” Dr Akshay More, head of BMC MARD said to NDTV.

This incident comes amid the nationwide protests and outrage over the horrific incident of trainee doctor, who was raped and murdered on duty inside the seminar hall of RG Kar medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.

The medical fraternity, including the doctors, nursing staff, and medical students have been on the streets demanding the prompt action in the investigation. Junior doctors and medical students across the hospitals and medical colleges in Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad and other cities staged a protest demanding speedy justice.

Healthcare services remained affected across West Bengal for the tenth consecutive day on Sunday as agitating junior doctors at state-run hospitals continued their cease-work demanding justice for the victim.

Meanwhile, the union health ministry has proposed to constitute a committee to suggest measures for safety of healthcare professionals at workplace in wake of the ongoing outrage. It said that representatives of all stakeholders including the state governments would be invited to share their suggestions with the committee.
