Musharraf comes to PCB's aid
PCB wanted the charge of the Rawalpindi Stadium and Faisalabad's Iqbal Stadium so that they could be upgraded.

Karachi: Pakistan Cricket Board's efforts to spruce up its infrastructure in time for the 2008 Champions Trophy received a boost with President Pervez Musharraf instructing the authorities concerned to hand over the stadiums in Rawalpindi and Faisalabad to the PCB immediately.

The PCB, eager to upgrade the country's cricket facilities ahead of a series of important international tournaments including the World Cup 2011, had been seeking charge of the the Rawalpindi Stadium and Faisalabad's Iqbal Stadium which in a bad shape because of lack of proper maintenance.

"The President was surprised because he thought the PCB had already been given the control of the two stadiums," Abbas Zaidi, PCB's Director of Board Operations, was quoted as saying in The News.

Zaidi said the President's assurance came when he met PCB Chairman Shaharyar Khan at a function to felicitate the Under-19 team that won the ICC U-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka earlier this year.

The President, who is also the Board's patron-in-chief, honoured the Under-19 squad at a reception held at the Aiwan-e-Sadr.
