HYDERABAD: TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu has appealed to the state government not to levy VAT on the hiked portion of the price of petrol. The state is set to get a windfall of Rs 200 crore by way of VAT after the hike announced by the central government. Speaking to mediapersons here on Thursday, Naidu alleged that VAT, being imposed in the state, was meant to loot people. If the state was in financial dire straits today, it was because of rampant corruption in high places, he charged. This apart, the Centre too was slapping one tax or the other on the people, making life unbearable for the common man, he said. “The hike in the price of petrol is nothing but daylight robbery of people. There is not one area where the Centre has not imposed service tax. In the state, property tax has gone up by 1,000 percent over the last few years,’’ the leader of the opposition said.
