Admiral D K Joshi, who took over as the Chief of Naval Staff two weeks ago, has said that the consolidation of naval capabilities tops his priorities.
Speaking to the reporters here on Saturday, Admiral Joshi said that firm timelines have been set for the indigenous aircraft carrier (IAC), which is being built at the Cochin Shipyard.
“Essentially my foremost task is that of consolidating the capabilities of the Indian Navy. New technologies of all dimensions are being inducted by the Navy. We have recently made a transition from the conventional technology to the nuclear domain,” he said, while elaborating his priorities as the Navy Chief.
“INS Vikramaditya, the sole aircraft carrier, will come with its all-integral MIG 29K aircraft that will bring to the table the capabilities of a fighter aircraft that the Navy had never seen before.
“Then there is P8I Boeing. So, essentially we need to consolidate continuously and re-order our preparations, our training, our organisation and our maintenance to ensure that on induction, all these platforms and technologies are available for optimum utilisation. It is a big task and we are on it,” he said.
Regarding the next phase of the indigenous aircraft carrier, the Admiral said that he had visited the Cochin Shipyard and discussed the matter with the CMD. Admitting that there has been a delay, the Navy Chief said that the CSL had informed him that the delay is now over.
“There were some delays. The CMD of CSL informed me that the delay is over and firm timelines have been set. I told the CSL that the whole nation is anxiously waiting for the induction of the aircraft carrier,” he said. The Admiral added that the shipyard would put its best efforts to complete the project on time.
“Not many countries in the world make indigenous aircraft carriers. The CSL is entirely cognisant of it and is working towards it,” he said.
Regarding a recent hacking incident at the Western Naval Command, the Navy Chief said that at times, the naval personnel unwittingly end up posting official matters that are not classified.
“They take it home or to their personal machines to facilitate work. So far, there has been no evidence of its intentional transfer,” he said.
