N-deal: UPA, IAEA will negotiate safeguards agreement
The IAEA Board of Governors meeting opens in Vienna on Monday.

New Delhi: Experts have told CNN-IBN that the Government is likely to go ahead with negotiations on an India-specific safeguards agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The IAEA Board of Governors meeting opens in Vienna on Monday.

The Chief of the Atomic Energy Commission, Anil Kakodkar, has confirmed that he will be in Vienna for much of that week.

Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee has said the international community could have nuclear trade with India after a safeguards agreement is in place.

The Left has insisted that negotiating with the IAEA on the safeguards agreement is tantamount to operationalising the deal, but the Government does not agree.

The US meanwhile, said it was "important" for India to negotiate a safeguards agreement to operationalise the deal even as Kakodkar remained tight-lipped on whether he would hold talks with the UN nuclear watchdog.

Nudging India to fulfill its obligations under the nuclear cooperation agreement, US Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman was quoted by news agency PTI as saying, "It is important that both India and the US complete these processes by working with International Atomic Energy Agency and Nuclear Suppliers' Group."
