HYDERABAD: 21 non-governmental organisations have come forward to join hands with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to provide night shelters for at least 2,000 homeless poor in the twin cities by end of the year.The NGOs are Dalit Women Forum, LSN Foundation, Amanvedika, Spurti, Sannihitha, Aasra GHMC, APSA, Aashray Destitute home, APMWS, Navabharath Association, Conare, Such, Don Bosco Navajeevan, Kinnera Welfare Association, Janavikas Society, Aashray, HARD, Access, Press and Scope.Mayor Banda Karthika Reddy also appealed to the public to come forward and encourage the concept of providing night shelters to orphans in the city. As per Supreme Court orders, the civic body and NGOs are committed to provide shelter to the homeless. Karthika Reddy informed that presently, the GHMC is providing night shelters in five places. Efforts were being made to increase the number to 60 in a phased manner. Food, medicines, clothes, bed sheets and other facilities like haircut, bath and toilets will also be provided to the homeless. She appealed to residential welfare associations to spare community halls in their colonies as night shelters for orphans. She added there are about 4,463 persons without shelter and they were taking steps to provide them shelters.
