Jabalpur: The Madhya Pradesh government on Friday failed to reply to a petition in the high court underlining the lack of adequate toilets for women police personnel in police stations across the state.
The Madhya Pradesh High Court on November 16 served notices to the Director General of Police and Chief Secretary seeking replies within four weeks on non-availability of sufficient numbers of separate toilets for women police personnel in police stations.
The state government, which was required to submit its reply before the HC could not file its response on Friday and the court, has now posted the matter for hearing to January 16.
The petitioner advocate Amitabh Gupta had told the court through his petition that out of the total 365 police stations and 189 police outposts in particular districts in the state, only 162 police stations and 170 outposts had separate toilets for women police personnel. His claims were based on the news reports citing CG report findings.
However, the state government’s failure to submit a reply before the HC comes at a time when the Shivraj Singh government has declared women empowerment as its top priority.
Meanwhile, in a 2014 letter, the Home Ministry had told the states and Union Territories to construct toilets and restrooms for women personnel on a "priority" basis in the state action plan for 2014-15 as it has been a long pending basic amenity.
