New Delhi: Venezuela and Gautemala have repeatedly failed to get enough votes to win a seat as a non-permanent member at the UN Security Council.
Sixteen rounds of voting have already taken place till now.
India is among the 192 member countries voting. But there are reports saying New Delhi is under pressure from the US to vote against Venezuela.
This could be because the US is backing Gautemala. John Bolton, the US ambassador to the UN says, there's still a long way to go.
The Latin American and Caribbean group were holding informal consultations to break the impasse.
During 12 futile rounds held in quick succession with a two-hour lunch break none of the contestants came anywhere near two-thirds majority needed to be elected for a two-year term beginning on January 1 next.
In one round there was a tie but in the remaining Guatemala led. The maximum number of votes that Guatemala got yesterday was 112 and for Venezuela, it was 85. Caracas said it would not abandon its bid for a UNSC seat.
The record number of 155 rounds were played out in 1979 between over a period of several days between Cuba and Columbia and ultimately, Mexico emerged as the compromise candidate.
The bickering between Venezuela and Guatemala and Venezuela and the US, which is supporting Guatemala continued throughout the day as Ambassadors came out after each round to address reporters.
At the end of the day, the 23rd round was postponed for 24 hours to Thursday morning at the request of the Latin American and Caribbean group, which said they are making efforts to resolve the impasse.
