Corporation officials have promised a water-logging free monsoon for Thiruvottiyur this year as work on desilting storm water drains and repairing damaged drains is likely to be completed by the end of next week. Started in July, the Rs 1.68 crore project includes desilting, repair work and the removal of the deposited silt.
Officials say that the silt will be removed within a day. “The maximum time given for the silt to dry up is one day. After that we will remove it. We are making all efforts possible for an incident-free monsoon,” they said.
In addition, polishing up of the zone’s interior roads are also on the agenda. “There are 17 grid roads that have been identified for integrated road stormwater drain works. The estimated cost of this project is Rs 19 crore. Work started last month and will be completed in two more months,” said a Corporation official.
Some of these grid roads that will get street furniture, proper functioning street lights and new name boards are Appaswamy Koil Street, Pattinathar Koil Street, West Mada Street, North Mada Street, Kannagi Street and the market road at Kaladipettai among others.
Along with the grid roads, there are also 78 ‘budget roads’ that will be re-laid and patched up wherever necessary. Stormwater drain works will also be undertaken, said Corporation officials. At a cost of Rs 8.09 crore, the project was officially inaugurated by Chennai Mayor Saidai S Duraiswamy.
