The National Security Guard (NSG), globally renowned for their zero-error record in special operations, is currently undergoing a process of fresh manpower rationalisation directed by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Discussions are ongoing regarding whether the VIP wing should remain within the NSG or not, with sources suggesting that its inclusion may impact the number of personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces in NSG. The induction from CAPFs may reduce if the move is implemented.

Multiple meetings have been held in the Union Home Ministry and top officials are claiming that the move will change the entire setup and take the force to a new level with more teeth.

Additionally, there are deliberations regarding potential reductions in strength. Top sources familiar with the rationalisation process stated that the NSG will transition into a specialised operations force, prioritising anti-terror operations over providing security to VVIPs.

Recently, a letter was circulated, urging a halt to the induction of troops from the Central Armed Police Forces who had completed commando conversion courses. However, this was refuted by NSG top officials. The letter addressed the induction of 86 personnel, advising against their release due to the ongoing rationalisation process.

Regarding VVIPs currently receiving security from the NSG, such as Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, a senior official mentioned that the Central Reserve Police Force will be tasked with providing their security. CRPF is already responsible for the security of Union Home Minister Amit Shah apart from the Gandhi family who used to get SPG cover.

The NSG serves as a federal contingency force primarily tasked with combating terrorist activities to safeguard states against internal disturbances arising from such activities, including scenarios such as terrorist neutralisation, anti-hijack operations, and hostage rescues. Additionally, the NSG is assigned the responsibility of providing mobile security protection to designated high-risk VIPs.

National Security Guard was conceptualised and created after studying and analysing special forces such as the SAS of UK, GIGN of France, GSG-9 of Germany, Sayaret-e-Matkal of Israel, and Delta Force of USA. The basic philosophy of NSG is swift and speedy strike and immediate withdrawal from the theatre of action.
