New York: It was supposed to be homecoming day for little Anthony Rojas. Instead, authorities say, his mother left the hospital with the newborn, suffocated him with his blanket and dumped his body in a trash can on the street.
Lucila Rojas, 25, was charged with second-degree murder on Tuesday in the death of her two-week-old son, while police looked for the baby's body in two landfills where the city's garbage is often taken.
Rojas claimed the baby was conceived as the result of her being raped in Mexico and now "will sleep forever," authorities said.
Anthony was born on December 17, according to Lt Anthony Mottola of New York Police Department.
On New Year's Eve, Rojas boarded a bus with the baby. When she got off the bus, she placed Anthony's naked body in a plastic bag, threw it away and went to her relatives' home nearby, authorities said.
She said the baby was blue and not breathing when she discarded him, they said. Later, she reported the baby missing and told police a man dressed in black pressed a gun into her back and abducted the baby from the hospital.
Police became suspicious because the details changed as they continued to question her.
"The defendant's alleged suffocation of her innocent and helpless child was both heartless and heartbreaking," said Queens District Attorney Richard Brown.
Rojas also was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and violating public health laws by failing to provide a decent burial and disposing of a body without a permit.
She was being held without bail. If convicted, she could face up to 25 years to life in prison.
