Olympian boxer Abrar Hussain was on Thursday shot dead by unidentified gunmen.

Quetta: Olympian boxer Abrar Hussain was on Thursday shot dead by unidentified gunmen here, police said. Hussain, the Deputy Director General of the Pakistan Sports Board, was attacked by the gunmen near Ayub Stadium in Quetta.

He succumbed to his injuries at the Combined Military Hospital. Quetta-based Hussain represented Pakistan in boxing in three Olympics.

No group claimed responsibility for the killing.

Abrar remained a big name in Pakistan boxing having won gold medal in the 1990 Asian Games in Beijing and in many other international competitions, including the second and fourth South Asian Games.

He also represented Pakistan in three Olympics in 1984, 1988 and 1992 and was awarded the highest civilian awards the Sitara-e-Imtiaz and Pride of Performance for his sporting exploits by the government.

The restive Baluchistan province has been rocked by a string of sectarian and ethnic killings since last year.
