CHENNAI: There are certain types of jewellery that will never go out of fashion, especially in South India, and one of those will always be the much-in-demand Kaasu maalais. Giving their own contemporary twist to the Kaasu malai, to make it more accessible to young, modern women, was C Krishniah Chetty & Sons, who displayed a wide collection at their recent exhibition. On December 17 and 18, C Krishniah Chetty & Sons displayed some of their best designs at the Taj Coromadel, as a preview to their store which they will open here in the city, early next year. Right from ornate wedding jewellery to simple everyday wear, the exhibition had on display everything that a woman could ever want. Their salon style of jewellery had a fair measure of clear emeralds and rubies, which were tactfully placed on earrings, bracelets and necklaces. Costing approximately 40 lakh, the chokers were quite an eyeful, with their intricate designs and glistening stones. The diamonds were  also well used in enhancing the simplistic designs of the pieces. Complete contrasts to the contemporary salon jewellery were the heritage jewellery. With stones in earthy tones embedded in gold, on display were a range of kundans, false hair attachments embellished with stones and even quasi rudraksh jewellery. The traditional jewellery inspired from south India were replete with mangoes, flowers and other designsThe highlight of the exhibition was the classic everyday jewellery collection. Simple and elegant, the thin necklaces, the chic and artistic earrings, bracelets studded with glittering diamonds and other colourful stones, all looked apt for young working women. The store will open in February 2012, a representative informed.
