JAIPUR: Tension prevails at Dharapur village under Bari police limits following death of a labourer of the village in South Africa under mysterious circumstances. Body of Narendra Naik (45) arrived in the village on Monday night. Narendra was one of the 24 Oriya labourers, who had migrated to South Africa to work in a construction firm after being promised good salary, free food and accommodation by a broker Ranka Bhuinan of Ranigoda area here on May 4. He, however, reportedly died of fever caused due to malnutrition and unhealthy working conditions in South Africa. His body was brought to the village by four persons from Bhubaneswar on Monday night. Sensing foul play, the villagers refused to accept the body and have detained the four persons. "Due to poverty, my husband opted to go abroad for work. I tried contacting the broker but in vain," said Narendra's wife Subasini.
Meanwhile, sources said that the condition of 23 other labourers is also deplorable. Contacted over phone, one of them Ajay Kumar Kar said dirty water and unhygienic food are being served to them everyday. "No medical aid is being provided to us and we are paid much less than what the broker had promised us," he said.Village Sarpanch Bijay Kumar Samal said the four persons would be released only after an official from the construction firm visits the
village.
