Kuala Lumpur: Hennie Otto and Jbe Kruger reached 9-under on Friday to share the early second round lead at the Maybank Malaysian Open as South African golfers continued to dominate the event. In the first round, former Masters Champion Charl Schwartzel had set the pace at 8-under with a 64 and was one of the late starters for the second round.
Otto, last year's South African Open champion, followed his opening 71 with a 64 that contained eight birdies and no bogeys.
Kruger, who had started from the tenth tee at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club, joined Otto at the top of the leaderboard with a 65. He also made eight birdies but dropped a shot at the par five third hole.
"I've been working on a lot of things and it seems to be coming together which is always a good sign," Kruger said. "I just worked a bit on my swing which is not really 100 per cent yet. My ball striking used to be my strength and now it is my weakness. I'm trying to make it my strength again."
"All of us (South Africans) are coming into this tournament with a little bit of form," he said. Otto said he was feeling more comfortable on the greens. "You are always going to be happy after a 64" he said. "I putted very well today and there were two really ups and downs for pars that were vital because they really kept my momentum going. "It happens a lot in this game that if you don't make those ups and downs, then you lose the momentum," he said. "Apart from that, I hit it great and was in close for most of the birdies."
